SEO and Paid Ads: How They Work Together

Organic search and paid advertising answer different needs. A useful strategy gives each a clear job and makes the learning travel both ways.

Start with the customer’s question

Someone searching for a service may be comparing options, checking a price or trying to solve a problem. Both SEO and paid search work better when you understand that intent. Start by listing the questions customers ask before they buy. Group those questions by the pages that can answer them, rather than treating every keyword as a separate campaign or article.

Give each channel a job

SEO helps build useful, discoverable pages over time. Paid search lets you test specific offers and reach people through eligible advertising placements while campaigns are running. Advertising requires an ongoing media budget; organic visibility requires ongoing work and is not guaranteed. The practical question is how the two channels support the same customer journey within your resources.

Share useful learning

Paid search terms can reveal how people describe a need, where the available reporting supports that analysis. Those patterns can inform service-page language and future content briefs. Search Console can highlight the queries already bringing impressions to a website. Those observations can help shape a paid test, but organic interest does not automatically mean a term will be profitable in advertising.

Build a page that earns the visit

A relevant page should explain the offer, who it is for and the next step. A visitor arriving through an ad may need a focused landing page; someone researching a question may need a fuller guide. Avoid sending every visitor to the homepage simply because it already exists. Review mobile usability, form clarity and the connection between the message and the page.

Measure without double counting

Platforms can attribute the same enquiry differently. Agree what counts as a qualified enquiry, check which tracking is available and permitted, and treat platform totals as signals to reconcile. Keep spend, completed SEO work and available conversion data visible in the same review. Your sales feedback adds context that a click report cannot supply.

A practical starting point

Choose one priority service. Improve its main page, list the most relevant customer questions and define a small paid test with a separate media budget. Agree a review point and the evidence you will use to decide what to change. This creates a focused learning cycle before you expand to more services.
